The peer-nominated list published in New York Times Magazine is described as, “The guide to the top 5% of New York City physicians in more than 30 specialties.” Only 2.5% of physicians in a state or region are named to the Rising Stars list. To be eligible, candidates must be active and fully-licensed to practice for 10 years or less.
To develop the list of the best doctors, physicians from the NYC area nominate peers from whom they would seek medical care. Then, all candidates are evaluated using a set of 10 criteria: years of experience, leadership positions, academic achievements/positions, publications and presentations, honors and awards, board certifications, hospital appointments and fellowships, professional activities, and other outstanding achievements in medicine. Based on this rigorous evaluation, physicians who score the highest form a “blue ribbon panel” where they evaluate doctors within their own area of expertise. The doctors who are rated the best are independently verified to be clear of outstanding disciplinary issues, and then the final list gets published.
