In this video Q&A clip, Dr. Bernstein dispels a couple of myths about Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) hair transplant surgery and compares it to Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT). Here is a more detailed summary of the video:
Follicular [Unit] Extraction is every bit as surgical as a regular hair transplant. The only difference is [that] the incisions are little round holes, rather than one single line incision. So, of course it's surgery. With respect to the pain, we use anesthesia, so neither FUE or FUT have any discomfort whatsoever during the procedure. The difference is, after the procedure, a line scar, or a line incision, that is stapled closed will be more uncomfortable than individual holes. And that is really what the main difference is.
